when living serves up lemons, make lemon poundcake

Sundays, my day of rest aka the day for pedaling around for the Sun Salutations Pedal Abouts rewarded with a delicious cuppa joe and a perfect omelette. Just me and 2.0 (my cute purple bike, #2). We even got out there, turned the pedals 3 times…then realized the gears weren’t shifting. The sadness didn’t immediately cloud up over me…it wasn’t until I realized why the shifters wouldn’t shift…and the Sun Salutations Pedal About was then dashed for no longer. The sadness ensued… I knew it would… me riding my bike, the ultimate measure of my vitality and fixer of every heartache since the first time I realized me riding my bike was everything.

Obviously…at least to me, when all my troubleshooting was troubleshot, the next thing I did was call Amos, the owner of my favorite bike shop…and my friend…he wasn’t there. I had a feeling he wouldn’t be. It’s Sunday after all…a group bike ride from the shop is usually happening on Saturdays and Sundays followed by coffee and snacks to shoot the sh@t with all those lucky ones who made it out…at the coffee shop across the way…so he got a message on his actual answering machine (that’s right! YOU HEARD ME! He still has an answering machine! He also has no cell phone…just a land line with a phone attached to the wall!). It was the sad, quite distraught Sue voice he got. I had a good feeling he’d call me back like I asked in the last words I left in my message.

The good news is, I probably don’t need new shifters…the funny news is, I didn’t have the tool I’m pretty sure Amos gave me a couple trips to New England ago to open up the shifter and look about at the wiring… the bad news is, I was still not going to be able to ride around on 2.0 until I got me to a bike shop that can repair such shifters to hopefully just reconnect a couple wires. That is the hope! That some of the wires just got disconnected.

So…at this point, I had a choice…to just get back into bed and mope. OR, go to the fridge and get to work on the drawer full of lemons and veggies I bought from the farmers market to juice. And, well, WHY NOT? Make that lemon poundcake I had planned to make 2 weeks ago then one week ago…and well…today was the actual day! I had all of the ingredients and the new recipe written in my The Choco Chick head. It’s just so challenging to bake or do much of any kind of cooking in the kitchen I’m using until The Choco Chick kitchen is finally built. I dread it, really. But since I made the most perfect chocolate poundcake I never knew I could make last month, I’d been thinking about making the lemon blueberry poundcake I was hoping would also be the most perfect. And well, it was pretty near perfect! It could be more perfecter. I know what will change. And, what will shock everybody, The Choco Chick took notes! She wrote down the recipe this time!

Between this near perfect lemon poundcake and thee very perfect chocolate poundcake is a base poundcake recipe The Choco Chick will use for so many different kinds of poundcake! From lemons to lemon blueberry poundcake… I’m still blue for the no Sunday Sun Salutations. But I was able to turn some of the blue into the blueberries in the lemon blueberry poundcake. Other things came out of this far from perfect kitchen experience I’ve been cooking out of…but the shining star is this poundcake.

So much about my lifelong dreams are nearly true. So close…so many assurances from the innerFriends that I’m not fooling myself. I’ve made the right decisions this last year of my life to get me to right where I am right now. On the toughest days of late, I question everything…then out of the blue a call from a friend or a giant hug or three, from both new and old. Just what I didn’t know I needed until I did and I knew.
